Well here it is almost the middle of March. Spring is on its way – although looking out my office window there is still lots of snow to be seen. We are nearing the completion of our second half (albeit shortened) of league play. My thanks to each of our members that did not give the Conveners a hard time about having to sign into the Club each time they came to play and the extra time it took to sanitize everything at the end of the game. You all did great and I am pleased to report that we heard only of three cases of COVID-19 at the Club. Although the actual curling season will end shortly the social aspects and fund raising efforts continue throughout the year. There are still lots of volunteer and socializing opportunities available.
New Horizons for Seniors Program
We are very pleased to announce that the Marmora and Area Curling Club is the recipient of a $25K grant from New Horizons for Seniors Program. These funds will provide the money to replace stair railings, put new railings and awning over the side entrance and install security cameras in the Club. Thanks to Peter Ylipelkola and Paul Lachance on their work to get this funding.
Ice Maker
We can once again look forward to having great ice for our 2022/23 Curling Season as our current ice maker; Rick Barnard is back on board with us. Rick and his team do a great job and keep the ice in tip top shape.
Think Tank
Each year, your Board members get together on a Saturday and develop our one, three and five year plan. If you have any ideas or suggestions that you feel would ensure we continue to grow, increase membership and improve our Club please fill out a survey form or chat with one of the league conveners.
Where’s the Beef?
I am sure everyone has noticed the higher cost of groceries. With this in mind, the MACC is pleased to announce our latest raffle. We are in the process of getting tickets ready for another draw. How would you like to win $500 worth of meat generously donated by One Stop Butcher Shop in Madoc? Tim is a generous supporter of the Curling Club. We will have the tickets ready prior to the end of the season. You will also be able to pick them up at the usual outlets around town – The Cutting Corner, Bruce Cooks Barber Shop, The Ultramar and of course One Stop Butcher Shop in Madoc.
End of Season Banquet
Our end of the season banquet is scheduled for Saturday, April 2, 2022. The cost is only $20.00 (includes tax and gratuity) for a sure to be delicious meal catered by Sharpe’s from Campbellford. This is when the League winners are announced, trophies presented and the Volunteer of the Year award announced. If you haven’t signed up yet, give Joy Reid a call at 613-472-3326 and reserve your spot.
M.A.C.K. Fest
A new rental at the MACC this season M.A.C.K. Fest – an annual event held for Kayakers. They will be using the Curling Club for their trade show and dinners from Thursday April 7 to Sunday morning April 10, 2022. This event brings kayakers from all over the province so great exposure for our facility and the community. My thanks to all of the hardworking volunteers that will be getting the ice out and the facility ready for this group.
Chicken Pot Pies
Due to many requests, we will be doing another chicken pot pie sale. Orders must be received by April 29, 2002 (Cost is $25 for six and $40 for a dozen). Assembly and pick up is on Thursday, May 12, 2002. As we won’t have the ice in at that time it is important that everyone pick up their pies as quickly as possible. If you would like to order please send me an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or call me at 613-472-5362. If you haven’t tried them previously they are delicious. There are lots of chicken, veggies and gravy in each 5 inch pie.
Classic Country Jamboree, 50s/60’s Rock & Roll Jamboree and BIG Yard Sale
If you love music you are in for a treat this year. There is going to be not one but two jamborees held at the Fair Grounds. The first one, Classic Country music takes place from June 10 to 12th. The Curling Club will be hosting our BIG yard sale and also providing dinner for the attendees on the Saturday evening. Then on the weekend of June 24th to 26th, classic rock and rollers can twist to the oldies. Again the Curling Club will be holding our BIG yard sale and offering a dinner on the Saturday evening. If you have donations for the yard sales please contact either Joy Reid at 613-472-3326 or Donna Gabourie at 613-403-1747. These ladies are also looking for volunteers to help at both of the yard sales. I will need help in the kitchen for the catered dinners.
Golf Tournament
One of our highly anticipated events is the Annual Golf Tournament. This is being held on Saturday, August 27, 2022. Golfing takes place in Madoc and participants return to the Curling Club for dinner and prizes. Contact Joy to book your spot as this event sells out quickly.
I think that is about all for now. I look forward to seeing many of you throughout the summer and again for the Curling Season 2022/23.
Stay healthy and safe.
